The world is quaking under our feet. The CDC is urging food and water storage and contingency plans for natural disasters. Who is paying attention?
As religious Jews living in עיקבתא דמשיחא, we have excellent reason to take these warnings seriously. It is clear that the חבלי משיח will soon be upon us. When they arrive, Amos warns us (4:12) we’d better be ready
כה אעשה לך ישראל עקב כי זאת אעשה לך הכון לקראת אלקיך ישראל
This is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel.
Despite the desperate situation, the Navi instructs us not to be paralyzed by fear, but to take concrete actions to prepare. Yirmiyahu exhorts Mitzrayim (46:19)
כלי גולה עשי לך יושבת בת מצרים
Vessels of exile prepare for yourself, O you daughter who dwells in Egypt.
Yechezkel shows the Jews by example (12:3)
ואתה בן אדם עשה לך כלי גולה וגלה יומם לעיניהם
And you, son of man, make for yourself vessels of exile and go into exile by day in their sight.
In this spirit, we are reaching out to youngsters in yeshivas and camps, and oldsters in local HIkon Chapter meetings to teach self-sufficiency and sustainability skills which will be important in establishing a normal life in the “new normal”, whatever that turns out to be.
What Is Happening
The world faces systemic crises across multiple sectors, and the public must begin paying attention to these compounding vulnerabilities:
- Scarcity of lumber and forest products: Forests across North America, Europe, Brazil, and beyond are experiencing unprecedented wildfire destruction. These high-intensity blazes—along with rampant beetle infestations—destroy forest ecosystems permanently, signaling the end of an era of abundant, low-cost wood.
- Power grid instability: Aging infrastructure can no longer reliably support rising demand. As traditional power sources (coal, oil) are phased out, intermittent renewable sources (solar, wind) increase grid volatility whenever generation fails to match real-time consumption.
- Cybersecurity vulnerabilities in public infrastructure: As critical municipal services rush to connect systems to the internet, cybercriminals exploit unavoidable security gaps. Connecting essential utilities like municipal water supplies and transit networks to public networks exposes vital systems to constant threat.
- Supply chain fragility: Ocean shipping delays, shortages of warehouse space, shipping container deficits, and chronic shortages of port workers and truck drivers reveal that fast, cheap global shipping is no longer guaranteed.
Why It Is Happening
1. Depletion of the Global Wood Supply
- Decades of fire suppression: Extinguishing natural, minor forest fires has allowed dense, dry brush to accumulate on forest floors, fueling catastrophic megafires.

- Groundwater depletion: Agricultural over-pumping leaves trees chronically parched and highly flammable.

- Effects of deregulation: Energy market deregulation policies frequently prioritize immediate cost efficiency over necessary backup redundancies and weather-proofing infrastructure.
- Transmission distance challenges: Generating power at distant wind or solar farms requires pushing energy over vast distances, overloading long-range high-voltage lines.
- System complexity: The grid is an intricate, aging web of over 7,000 power plants, 160,000 miles of high-voltage lines, and millions of miles of local distribution lines.

What We Should Do About It

Passive Design and Natural Building
Modern homes rely heavily on continuous electrical power for climate control and basic safety. During intense heatwaves, grid failures transform this reliance into an immediate, life-threatening hazard.
We must rediscover passive building principles:
- Thermal Mass: As Tosafos notes, stone dwellings naturally resist extreme ambient heat.
- Earth Construction: Given impending timber shortages, earth-based construction techniques—such as adobe (a mix of earth, water, and straw)—offer a durable, accessible alternative. Earth structures are long-lasting, fire-resistant homes capable of maintaining indoor comfort across all seasons when combined with passive solar design principles.
- Proactive Skill Building: Developing localized expertise in earth construction takes time. Training our youth today ensures our communities possess the knowledge needed to build resilient housing before emergency situations arise.
Practical and Artisanal Education
Global supply chain disruptions demonstrate the risk of relying entirely on imported, factory-made goods. We must equip our youth with practical, hand-on skills so they can design, repair, and create essential items locally.
To address this, Camp Hikon is developing a practical curriculum designed to integrate seamlessly into traditional Yeshiva general studies frameworks (Limudei Chol):
- Applied Mathematics: Replacing abstract train-collision word problems with practical geometry—such as calculating roof overhang angles to optimize winter solar heat while blocking summer sun.
- Applied Biology & Agriculture: Shifting focus toward sustainable crop cultivation, soil management, and arid-climate agriculture.
- Practical History: Studying how ancient civilizations engineered sustainable water systems, passive architecture, and localized supply strategies.
Engaging Students Through Practical Skill: Developing manual dexterity and hands-on craftsmanship provides struggling students with immediate, tangible achievements. Building self-esteem through practical mastery directly strengthens a student’s broader engagement in both secular studies and Torah learning (Limudei Kodesh).
Helping Our Youth
Our young people face unprecedented environmental and technological pressures—from pervasive dietary toxins to constant wireless EMF exposure. They need supportive environments, practical life skills, and clear, meaningful answers to why their education matters beyond simply “passing the Regents exams.”
By combining practical resilience training with traditional learning, we can prepare the next generation to navigate an uncertain future with confidence, self-reliance, and purpose.
